Daniel Smith focuses his practice in civil litigation, particularly in the areas of medical malpractice, insurance defense, and insurance coverage.  Mr. Smith represents assisted living and nursing facilities in neglect cases, and represents healthcare providers in medical malpractice cases.  He also handles complex litigation involving contract disputes, premises liability, products liability, and automotive liability.

Mr. Smith joined the firm in August 2016 following his judicial clerkship for the Honorable Paul M. Black of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke.  As a judicial law clerk, Mr. Smith gained substantial courtroom experience while working on a variety of matters in the bankruptcy court, including adversary proceedings involving contract interpretation, disputes with creditors, and property ownership issues.

Prior to his clerkship, Mr. Smith graduated cum laude from the George Mason University School of Law in 2015.  During law school, Mr. Smith interned at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Alabama Securities Commission, and the Institute for International Banking Law & Practice.  Mr. Smith also served as an Article Editor for George Mason Law Review, and was selected for the Supreme Court Clinic at George Mason Law.  Additionally, Mr. Smith served as Magister for Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society.

Prior to law school, Mr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005.  At UNC, Mr. Smith was a member of the Marching Tar Heels (trombone).  Following his graduation from UNC, Mr. Smith taught middle school at two inner-city schools in Washington, D.C. He then worked as a paralegal at a firm in Leesburg, Virginia, assisting with federal copyright litigation cases, and at a large firm in Washington, D.C., where he assisted with the representation of an internal audit committee of a Fortune 500 company involving investigations by the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.
